Chase 5/24 is real and here’s the proof

There has been lots of talk within the miles and points community about the so-called Chase 5/24 rule.  For months, the conventional wisdom has been that if you have applied for 5 or more credit cards (with ANY bank) in the past 24 months, you were unlikely to be approved for most Chase credit cards

There has been lots of discussion about whether 5/24 was a real Chase thing or not.  Certainly, anecdotal evidence pointed to the fact that if you had a lot of new credit card applications, you were going to be denied, but there was no proof of the numbers 5 or 24.

Now the proof of Chase 5/24 is out

On Reddit, it was pointed out that the application page for the new Chase Sapphire Reserve card contains a reference to 5/24

“You will not be approved for this card if you have opened 5 or more bank cards in the past 24 months”. (emphasis mine)

Seems like it can’t be more clear than that!  We kind of already knew that the Chase Sapphire Reserve seemed to fall under 5/24, though there are a few ways that people can get around it (applying in-branch via a preapproval or being part of the Chase Private Client program).

At this point, the other Chase card application pages do NOT have this wording on them, even though many other Chase cards seem to be restricted under Chase 5/24

There are still a few Chase cards that we know are NOT part of Chase 5/24.  The Chase IHG card is one of them as well as a couple of the other co-branded Chase cards.
